Kurram Residents Breathe Slight Relief as Food Prices Dip with Aid Arrival
PARACHINAR: People living in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s violent Kurram district are feeling a bit of relief since the costs of food items that are essential to their lives are beginning to fall after the arrival of convoys of aid.
The price decline is due to continuing efforts to ease the burdens caused by long road closures and supply shortages.
Recent arrivals of a massive vehicle that transports vegetables have lowered local market prices. Tomatoes now cost Rs150 per kilogramme, onions Rs250, and Green chillies are reduced from Rs800 to around Rs400 per kg.

Similar to this, prices for fruit are also down. Oranges now cost Rs400, down from Rs600. Lemons have also been decreased to Rs500 from Rs800.
The cost of live poultry has dropped by half to Rs500, and chicken meat has fallen from Rs2,000 to Rs1,200 a kg. However, the flour prices remain expensive, with a forty-kilogram bag costing about Rs9,500.
“Further reductions are expected as more vehicles arrive,” said Mohsin Ali, the president of the vegetable market.
Social activist Mir Afzal Khan emphasised the urgent need to replenish the supply of LPG gasoline, LPG, and diesel, which is in short supply.

Despite these improvements, however, road closures continue to hinder Kurram’s daily life. A member of the National Assembly (MNA), Hameed Hussain, stated that the closure of important transport routes affected all sectors.
Peace initiatives in accordance with the peace accord are in progress, and demolition of bunkers will be resumed as per the advisor of the Minister of Information and Public Relations, KP Chief Minister for Information and Public Relations Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif.
A fourth aid convoy of 70 vehicles carrying medicine, food, and daily essentials arrived at Kurram the previous day. The police district administration and security personnel provided security for the convoy to ensure the safety of delivery.
Compensation distribution to victims of violence also began and is bringing hope to the affected families.
Kurram has had to face a lot of difficulties since the outbreak of tribal violence in November 2024. It resulted in more than 130 deaths, as well as blocks that have endured for more than 100 days.
Essential items like fuel, medicine, and food are scarce, causing residents to pay astronomical prices.
A peace agreement negotiated by local committees and tribal elders has permitted limited transport of merchandise; the overall situation is still in limbo.
Recent assaults on convoys have strained the efforts of authorities, causing them to establish camps for people who are temporarily displaced (TDPs) and begin clearing operations in areas affected by the attacks.
