Indian Forces Arrest Pakistani Fisherman
Indian security personnel have allegedly detained a Pakistani fisherman while he was fishing in open waters, as reported by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum.
Babu Ali Mallah, a local from Jati tehsil in the coastal region of Sujawal, was arrested for purportedly violating the maritime border. The Fisherfolk Forum verified the occurrence, noting that Mallah participated in fishing efforts during his apprehension.
The forum also highlighted that this arrest contributes to fishermen’s ongoing struggles in the area. “At present, 20 fishermen from Jati tehsil are still imprisoned in Indian jails,” stated a representative of the organization.
In the meantime, last week, Pakistan and India exchanged lists of detainees in their respective custody through diplomatic channels. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office mentioned, “The Government of Pakistan submitted a list of 266 Indian prisoners in Pakistan (49 civilians and 217 fishermen) to a delegate from the High Commission of India in Islamabad.”
Concurrently, a representative from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi received the list of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails from the Indian authorities. According to this list, a total of 462 Pakistanis are held in Indian prisons, which includes 381 civilian inmates and 81 fishermen. The exchange of lists co-occurred in line with the 2008 Consular Access Agreement. This agreement mandated that both countries exchange lists of their inmates on January 1 and July 1 each year.
The Government of India has been called upon to release and send back all Pakistanis (52 civilian prisoners and 56 fishermen) who have served their sentences and whose national identification has been confirmed. The spokesperson also urged the Indian authorities to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all inmates who are either Pakistani or believed to be Pakistani and are pending their release and repatriation. Furthermore, it was mentioned that 38 missing defense personnel from the 1965 and 1971 wars had requested access to consular support.
