Talks Ongoing With IMF to Reduce Electricity Prices: Energy Minister
According to Federal Minister for Energy Owais Khan Leghari, the federal government’s objective was to decrease the cost of electricity by Rs50 per unit.
At a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Energy on Thursday, the minister stated that discussions with the IMF regarding captive power plants are ongoing and could potentially reduce electricity prices by Rs10 to Rs12 per unit.
Leghari stated that the negotiations with the IMF are in progress and will be finalized soon.
“We are evaluating eight bagasse-based power plants and will reevaluate an additional 16 plants.” Subsequently, we will discuss the return on equity for government facilities. The minister stated that the issue of captive power plants is expected to be resolved by the end of the month and that electricity prices for domestic consumers have already been reduced by Rs4 per unit.
He expressed his dissatisfaction with K-Electric’s projected profit of Rs500 billion over the next five to seven years. He cautioned that this could also negatively impact consumers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
