Microsoft Announces Massive $3 Billion AI Investment in India
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, announced on Tuesday that the company intends to allocate $3 billion to India over the next two years for the development of cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI).In recent years, the world’s most populous nation has emerged as a critical AI battleground as tech titans from the United States seek to attract new users and recruit new talent.
In the past few months, several prominent executives, such as Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, and Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Meta, have visited India.Nadella announced on Tuesday that the $3 billion investment would encompass establishing new data centres.“India is rapidly becoming a leader in AI innovation, unlocking new opportunities across the country,” according to Nadella.
“The investments in infrastructure and skilling we are announcing today reaffirm our commitment to making India AI-first and will help ensure people and organisations across the country benefit broadly.”The global adoption of AI has resulted in an increase in the sales of Microsoft’s primary cloud services, which have become the company’s foundation under Nadella’s leadership. The announcement was made less than a week after Microsoft president Brad Smith stated that the company was on course to invest $80 billion in AI this fiscal year.
Smith estimated that Microsoft was on track to allocate approximately $80 billion this year to developing AI datacenters, training AI models, and deploying cloud-based applications worldwide.“The United States is poised to stand at the forefront of this new technology wave, especially if it doubles down on its strengths and effectively partners internationally,” he wrote in an internet-based article.
