Jennifer Lopez Reveals Musicals She Auditioned for Before Landing ‘Kiss of the Spider-Woman’
Jennifer Lopez reminisced about her long-standing desire to participate in a musical. She shared that she auditioned for several films before landing a role in Kiss of the Spider-Woman. During a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter in anticipation of the musical’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, the 55-year-old singer highlighted some of the musical films she had hoped to appear in.
“I recall auditioning for Evita, I remember trying out for Chicago and Nine — I got very close to Nine,” Lopez shared. “There were many opportunities I always wished I could seize, but it just wasn’t the right time,” she added. The Atlas star remarked, “But now is the perfect opportunity.”
Chicago was released 2002, featuring Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones in leading roles, while Madonna starred as Eva Perón in Evita (1996). Nine, directed by Rob Marshall, featured an ensemble cast that included Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Marion Cotillard.
After screening Lopez’s inaugural musical, the film earned a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, January 26. “I have been anticipating this moment for my entire life,” Lopez expressed during the Q&A after the premiere.
“When you consider the significance of musicals, my motivation for entering this industry stemmed from watching my mother sit me down in front of the TV … we’d watch West Side Story, which aired once a year on Thanksgiving,” the singer elaborated.
“I recall being completely captivated.” “And I thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ That has always been my aspiration. This is the first time I’ve truly been able to fulfill it. This audience has made my dream a reality!” Lopez concluded.
