FWO Cuts Gilgit-Skardu Travel Time to 3 Hours with Jaglot-Skardu Road Project
The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has effectively completed the Jaglot-Skardu road, successfully addressing the formidable challenge of navigating the rugged mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan.
In 2015, a foreign firm was given a contract worth 52 billion rupees for the project, but due to the difficult terrain, it was unable to proceed.
In 2017, FWO took over the Jaglot-Skardu road project. Rising to the challenge, FWO accomplished the project using their exceptional skills.
Whereas the foreign company requested 52 billion rupees for the undertaking, FWO finished constructing the highway for only 31 billion rupees.
While the initial design included a 164-kilometer road, FWO constructed an extra 3 kilometers at no additional charge to enhance public convenience.
Along the route, 28 bridges and 484 culverts were erected.
To address the frequent mid-floods, the National Highway Authority (NHA) plans to build shelters and tunnels at 11 critical locations along the road.
FWO has regularly set aside 600 million rupees each year for the ongoing free maintenance of this road.
Previously, the journey between Gilgit and Skardu took 12 to 13 hours, but thanks to the completion of this road, it has been reduced to just 3 hours.
