Suparco Set to Launch EO-1 Satellite on January 17
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) revealed the successful launch of Pakistan’s Indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite on January 17 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China, as reported by APP.
The Indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite is a cutting-edge imaging satellite designed to obtain high-resolution optical images of the Earth. These types of satellites generally serve various purposes, such as environmental monitoring, urban development, agriculture, and defense and surveillance tasks.

Today’s announcement indicated that the launch of the EO-1 mission “demonstrates Suparco’s commitment and skill in enhancing Pakistan’s technological capabilities in space science and innovation,” marking an important milestone in the country’s space exploration efforts.
The domestically developed satellite will bolster Pakistan’s ability to oversee and manage natural resources, anticipate and respond to natural disasters, promote food security, and facilitate economic development through informed decision-making and sustainable practices.
The EO-1 satellite provides significant advantages across multiple sectors in Pakistan.
In agriculture, it will enable precision farming by observing crops, evaluating irrigation requirements, forecasting yields, and aiding food security programs.
For urban development, the satellite will help monitor infrastructure expansion, control urban growth, and support city and regional planning initiatives.

In regard to environmental monitoring and disaster management, it will deliver timely information regarding floods, landslides, earthquakes, deforestation, and soil erosion.
Moreover, it will assist in resource extraction and conservation efforts, including monitoring mineral deposits, oil and gas reserves, glacier melting, and water supply.
This accomplishment is poised to position advanced space technology at the forefront of national progress and enhancement, in line with the objectives of the National Space Policy.

In May of the previous year, Pakistan launched a multi-mission communication satellite, PakSat-MM1, to enhance internet connectivity and communication systems. This satellite was a collaboration between Suparco and the China Great Wall Industry Corporation.
Suparco also became involved in a lunar exploration mission in November, partnering with China’s Chang’e 8 mission, which is scheduled for launch in 2028.
