Pakistan’s Pulses Imports Rise by 12.56%, Totaling Rs147.26 Billion

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics has released the import bill figures for the first half of the current fiscal year.

The import of leguminous vegetables (pulses) increased by 12.56 percent in the first six months of this financial year compared to the same period last year.

From July to December 2024, pulses worth Rs147.262 billion were imported. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the import of tea in the country decreased by 9.50% to Rs87.32 billion during this timeframe.

However, tea imports saw a monthly increase of 6.62% to Rs15.624 billion in December 2024. Additionally, during July-December 2024, palm oil valued at Rs428.21 billion and soya bean oil worth Rs34.73 billion were imported to meet local needs.

The import of soya bean oil rose by 32.33% year-on-year and a staggering 238.93% month-on-month. In December, soya bean oil imports amounted to Rs14.25 billion, compared to Rs4.20 billion in November 2024.

The import of dry fruits also experienced significant growth, rising 118.32% year-on-year to Rs24 billion during July-December 2024.

Meanwhile, food group exports from Pakistan grew by 13.83 percent in the first half of the current fiscal year (2024-25) compared to the same period last year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Food commodity exports totaled $3.959 billion during July-December (2024-25), an increase from $3.478 million during July-December (2023-24), based on PBS data. The trade growth was significantly driven by rice exports, which increased by 14.50 percent, from $1.637 billion to $1.875 billion.
