OpenAI’s Sam Altman Responds to Sexual Abuse Allegations by Sister
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, refuted allegations made by his sister, Annie Altman, who has lodged a complaint accusing him of childhood sexual abuse. In a letter co-signed by his mother and two brothers, Altman stated, “Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, especially Sam,” which was shared on the social media platform X.
The family expressed their love for Annie and their concern for her well-being, noting, “Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult.”
Sam Altman, a prominent figure in Silicon Valley, gained international recognition with the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, which sparked a competitive drive in AI research and development. At the age of 39, Altman is a successful entrepreneur and billionaire dedicated to creating a form of “general” AI that possesses cognitive abilities akin to those of humans and aims to benefit all of humanity.
The Altman family indicated that they have made efforts to support their daughter and sister by covering her expenses and providing “monthly financial support, which we expect to continue for the rest of her life.” However, they noted that Annie continues to request additional financial assistance. They chose to address the public following Annie’s legal complaint filed on Monday amidst years of familial tension.
“The most serious allegation she has made is that Sam sexually abused her as a child,” the family stated. “Her claims have evolved significantly over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents occurring when Sam was over 18. All these claims are utterly untrue.”
According to the complaint, Annie, who is nine years younger than Sam, alleges that the abuse occurred from 1997, when she was three years old, until 2006. A 2023 report in New York Magazine featured a journalist who met Annie in Hawaii, describing her as an artist grappling with depression and a growing estrangement from her family, primarily supporting herself through online sex work.
