ISLAMABAD: Malala Yousufzai, who received Pakistan’s National Peace Prize as an eighth grader for her online diary addressing the Taliban’s prohibition on girls’ education in 2011, was shot by a Taliban gunman a year later. A representative from her Malala Fund charity has confirmed to AFP that she will attend the girls’ education summit on Sunday. Pakistan is set to host the International Conference…ce on “Girls’ Education in Muslim Communities from 11th to 12th January 2025 in Islamabad.

Two-day event

On Thursday, a statement from the foreign office indicated that the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training will organize the two-day event. “The international summit seeks to tackle the challenges and opportunities in promoting girls’ education within Muslim communities globally; encourage dialogue; and identify practical solutions to address these issues,” it mentioned. According to the statement, the conference will be an excellent venue for high-level discussions and partnerships. The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, will officially open the conference and will also give a keynote address during the inaugural session, reaffirming the country’s dedication to enhancing girls’ education and achieving gender equity.

Islamabad Declaration

The event will gather more than 150 international dignitaries, which include ministers, ambassadors, scholars, and academics from 44 Muslim and allied nations, as well as representatives from global organizations such as UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank. Speakers and panelists will present transformative success stories, highlighting innovative methods to enhance educational equity. “The conference will end with an official signing ceremony for the Islamabad Declaration, which outlines the collective commitment of the Muslim community to empower girls through education, setting the foundation for inclusive and sustainable educational reforms, and a brighter future for upcoming generations,” the statement noted.
