New Domestic and International Travel Rules Set to Launch in 2025
As we step into 2025, travelers can expect some critical updates for journeys both within the United States and abroad. With domestic flights needing revised identification and fresh entry requirements for Europe and the UK, keeping up-to-date will be crucial for a hassle-free travel experience.
REAL ID for US Flights
Starting May 7, 2025, travelers in the US will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities. This new regulation, implemented by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is designed to improve security by ensuring that all state-issued IDs adhere to federal standards.
To get a REAL ID, individuals must visit their state’s driver’s licensing agency and provide documents confirming their full legal name, date of birth, social security number, proof of address, and lawful status. As reported by USA Today, REAL IDs can be recognized by a unique seal located in the upper-right corner of the card, which may differ slightly from state to state.
If you don’t have a REAL ID, you can still use other TSA-approved forms of identification, such as passports, trusted traveler program cards (like Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI), or Department of Defense IDs.
ETA for the UK Entry
Starting January 8, 2025, international travelers intending to visit the United Kingdom (UK) will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new system, similar to the US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), aims to enhance border security by allowing UK authorities to vet visitors before they arrive, making the entry process smoother. Those planning a trip to the UK can easily apply for the ETA online or via a mobile app for a fee of £10 ($12.40). Once granted, the authorization permits unlimited entries over two years, as ABC News reported. It’s important to note that while the ETA is not a visa and does not replace current visa requirements, it serves as a pre-screening tool to facilitate a more efficient entry into the UK.
ETIAS for Europe Entry
Travelers planning a trip to Europe should prepare for the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which, after several delays, is set to launch in May 2025. This new requirement will apply to US passport holders and citizens from countries that currently do not need a visa, who will need to secure travel authorization before entering any Schengen Area nation. The ETIAS will permit multiple entries for short visits, allowing stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day timeframe, and will be valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever happens first. Much like the UK’s ETA, the ETIAS is designed to enhance security by screening travelers before their arrival.Once operational, travelers can apply for ETIAS online. The application fee is €7 ($7.21). The travel authorization will be electronically linked to the applicant’s passport upon approval.
