Massive Earthquake Strikes Tibet: 53 Dead, India Feels Aftershocks
New Delhi: Today, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Tibet near the Nepalese border, resulting in the deaths of 53 individuals, according to the AFP news agency, which cited Chinese media site Xinhua. The earthquake’s tremors were detected in various regions of India, such as Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.
“A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 am Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 53 individuals and the injuries of 62 others as of Tuesday noon,” according to the Chinese state-owned Xinhua news agency, as cited by AFP.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) detected the earthquake at 6:35 am. NCS data indicates that the region was struck by two additional earthquakes immediately after the initial one.
