Leghari Announces Govt's Decision to Stop Electricity Buying in 2025

The National Assembly was notified today that the government will cease purchasing electricity after March of this year, as permission has been granted to establish an Independent Electricity Market.

During the Question Hour, the Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari, informed the House that the Independent Electricity Market will allow consumers to buy electricity from various suppliers.

The Minister mentioned that contracts with over twenty-eight Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have been assessed, leading to a benefit of 1457 billion rupees for the national treasury.

He stated that since June of the previous year, the electricity tariff for industrial consumers has decreased by eleven rupees, while consumers across the country have seen a reduction of four rupees. 

Furthermore, the Minister for Energy announced that the tariff for electricity at EV charging stations has been lowered to thirty-nine rupees per unit from seventy-one rupees.

Awais Ahmad Leghari pointed out that special units have been created to enhance recoveries and monitor power theft. He noted that this initiative has yielded positive outcomes and is being expanded.

He also mentioned that there are no plans to alter the slab system, but the government is pursuing various initiatives to alleviate the financial burden on the average citizen.

Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari stated that advanced metering infrastructure has been rolled out across all Distribution Companies (Discos) and is being implemented in stages to ensure precise billing and improved customer satisfaction.

He added that the conditions necessary for privatizing power distribution companies will be fulfilled by the end of this month.

Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar informed the House that the ICT Senior Citizens Council has been restructured and will soon convene. He noted that the approval of the relevant rules will be included in the agenda for the upcoming meeting.
