Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was on her way home on Wednesday after being released from an Iranian prison, thanks to extensive diplomatic efforts, according to the Italian government. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Sala’s parents to share the good news and expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in securing her release, as stated by the Chigi Palace.
The statement noted, “An aircraft carrying Cecilia Sala has just departed from Tehran. Through dedicated work involving diplomatic and intelligence efforts, our compatriot has been freed by Iranian authorities and is en route back to Italy.” Sala’s flight is expected to arrive in Rome at 3:30 p.m. local time, as the non-profit ANSA news agency reported.
