Imran Khan Remains ‘Inaccessible’ to Party Members
Global Parliamentary Group to Monitor Imran Khan’s Trials, Says Lawyer
His lawyer said on Thursday that a global parliamentary body has agreed to send a representative to watch the trials against Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Khan’s lawyer, Khalid Yousuf Chaudhry, told Geo News that he talked about Khan’s cases with an official from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which is what led the IPU to decide to send a trial monitor.
Pakistan is a member of the IPU, which helps parliamentary diplomacy and gives parliaments and lawmakers the power to work for peace, democracy, and long-term development worldwide.
“The IPU representative was told about the court proceedings in the £190 million case,” Chaudhry said in his statement. “They were also informed about the Toshakhana cases.”
He said, “I provided the IPU representative with details regarding the penalties in the Toshakhana cases, as well as the legal and constitutional flaws and the violation of the right to a fair trial.”
Chaudhry said that the IPU official was also told about what happened on May 9 and the GHQ case. “In November 2023, an IPU trial observer attempted to visit Adiala Jail but was denied permission.”
It’s not the first time someone from outside Pakistan has discussed Khan’s jail time or cases. MPs from the UK and US have also called for the former prime minister’s release.
Khan is the only prime minister who a vote of no confidence has removed. He has been in jail since August 2023, even though all four of his sentences have been thrown out or suspended.
In July of last year, some British lawmakers called for the release of the former prime minister. In October 2024, over 60 Democratic lawmakers from the US House of Representatives wrote to President Joe Biden and asked him to use US power with Pakistan to get Khan released.
However, the governments of both countries have said that the problem is inside Pakistan.
They are also interested in Khan. Last month, the US, UK, and EU criticized military courts for sentencing civilians who were involved in attacks on military sites on May 9, 2023, after the jailed former prime minister was arrested.
