Darmian’s Goal Puts Inter in Second with 1-0 Win Over Venezia
VENICE, Italy, Jan 12 (Reuters) – Inter Milan achieved a 1-0 victory over struggling Venezia on Sunday, thanks to an early strike from Matteo Darmian that propelled them to second place in Serie A. The visitors took the lead in the 16th minute when Lautaro Martinez fired a low volley, compelling Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic to make a one-handed reflex save.

Still, the ball rebounded perfectly for Darmian, who calmly scored. Inter now sits at 43 points, just one ahead of Atalanta, who were held to a goalless draw against Udinese on Saturday. Napoli leads with 44 points but has played one match more than Inter. Venezia remains near the bottom in second-to-last place with 14 points. Simeone Inzaghi’s team, missing key players like Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Yann Bisseck, achieved their sixth consecutive away win while securing their first clean sheet in Inter’s history.

On loan from Inter, Stankovic performed admirably to stop Martinez’s attempt just before halftime, ensuring that the visitors only held a one-goal edge despite their dominance. Venezia started the second half with intensity, as Issa Doumbia sent a header from a corner, but Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a crucial save to thwart the hosts’ first shot on target. Davide Frattesi had a chance to double Inter’s lead but could not beat Stankovic one-on-one, with the latter deflecting the effort. Venezia nearly surprised Inter when Gianluca Busio’s angled shot struck the far post and bounced back, while Joel Pohjanpalo was flagged offside as he tried to score from the rebound.
