Biden Stands by His Foreign Policy Amid Mounting Global Crises
Outgoing President Joe Biden aimed to strengthen his foreign policy legacy on Monday, asserting that U.S. adversaries are less powerful now than they were when he assumed office four years prior, despite ongoing global challenges.
In a rare address at the State Department, less than a week before transferring power to President-elect Donald Trump, Biden highlighted his administration’s support for Ukraine in response to Russia’s 2022 invasion and for Israel amid conflicts in the Middle East. Biden claimed that the United States is “winning the global competition” and noted that the country would not be overtaken economically by China, contrary to earlier expectations.

At the same time, Russia and Iran have been weakened by conflicts that did not involve direct U.S. military action. “In comparison to four years ago, America is more robust, our alliances are more solid, and our adversaries and rivals are less formidable,” Biden stated. “We have not engaged in warfare to achieve these outcomes.”
Despite ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, officials are optimistic about securing an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas before Biden’s term ends on January 20. Biden mentioned that negotiators were nearing a resolution that would facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip and cease hostilities in the region to enable a flow of humanitarian aid.
“Countless innocent lives have been lost, and numerous communities have been devastated. The Palestinian people are entitled to peace,” he stated. Biden has encountered backlash for supplying Israel with military resources and diplomatic backing amid its offensive in Gaza following Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 individuals and the abduction of over 250 hostages, as reported by Israeli authorities. Since that time, Palestinian health officials report that more than 46,000 individuals have died in Gaza, with much of the area devastated and a majority of the population displaced.
Outside the State Department on Monday, demonstrators chanting “war criminal” greeted Biden, some holding placards and others throwing a red liquid meant to resemble blood. Biden asserted that he had assisted Israel in overcoming threats like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both of which are supported by Iran.
The U.S. president also praised America’s backing of Israel during two Iranian assaults in 2024. “Overall, Iran is less powerful than it has been in decades,” he remarked, pointing out the downfall of the Assad government in Syria. “There is no doubt that our actions played a significant role.”
