Ben Vereen Reflects Emotionally on His Relationship with Liza Minnelli
Liza Minnelli, an American actress, is the protagonist of the upcoming documentary Liza: The Story of Liza: The Truly Terrific Truly True Story, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In this documentary, Tony Award winner Ben Vereen talks about his passionate relationship with the actress.
It follows her saga of public marriages that include four in addition to the subsequent divorces of big names such as Martin Scorsese, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Peter Sellers.
In the face of an older black and white image of the two of them, Vereen commented, “She said, ‘I want to take a picture just or us,’. I said, ‘OK, sure.’ So I took off my shirt, and she took off her blouse. We took the shot. What the photo is saying is exactly what was in my mind: ‘I got you. ‘”
“Then the next thing I know, it was in Newsweek. All over the world,” said the journalist.
While it’s not stated in the documentary exactly when they were together, The most likely timeframe is the 70s between his friendship with Andrea Townsley and Nancy Bruner.
In reflecting on their bond, the actor said, “I’m sure a lot of people were shocked; however, it never was a part of our world. Two people were sharing the same moment. The conversation doesn’t end with, “Well, what would this White guy think of it or ‘What’s the Black guy going to think regarding it?’ We did not care. It was part of our world.”
When Vereen watched an old film about both of them, he became emotional. “I guess you’d call it love. I loved Liza. That’s my baby.”
